Nicolas on the cost of the Red Sea
3d animation (8'08", VR) oil paintings(30cm*40cm*3) 2017 |
This work contains 3 parts:
1, The projection on the wall is a 360 video, show- ing a journey in a virtual landscape. The tree-dimensional scene is actually a reconstruction of The Crossing of the Red Sea, a painting by French artist Nicolas Poussin. It depicts one of the fundamental biblical narratives, a story of promise and belief, exile and identity. 2, Spectators could play with the suspending iPad in the other side of the room. The screen image and the projection are synchronized. 3, A new version of The Crossing of the Red Sea has arrived in France across the sea: it’s a com- missioned painting from a Chinese painter who works in a village named Dafen, a place where gathers a group of painters doing their works on commission, just like the tradition. Characters in the original painting were removed by request. This reconstructive painting is structured in a format of 40x50 – an accustomed layout for the painter. This painting’s off-filed draws my attention. Just like in The Crossing of the Red Sea of Nicolas Poussin, the most splendid scene of this story – God miraculously parted the sea for the Israelites and then closed it – exists only in the spectator’s imagination. Several existent places are conjectured to be this famous biblical history. A topographic map of these surmised areas, acquired from Google, became was used as the basis of the 3D modeling. Following retouches made this scene resembles even more closely Poussin’s painting. A collision is thus obtained between the French painter’s imaginary place and the concrete assumption.Three interpretations of the same holy spot haul the geographical imagination towards the reality. |
