Que faire en un lieu à moins que l'on y songe？
set of oil painting, various sizes
Oil paintings in 360 degrees, presenting the Chau- vet cave, the Ivry castle and Notre-Dame de Paris. All the three places with historical stories in the past have now become the famous tourist sites.
Reproductions of places are omnipresent in con- temporary culture. Nevertheless, how do people reproduce a place in our time? A literary narration or a pictorial reproduction helps us to form an individual imagination of one place. The imagination of images is the most credible description. A place is the collective imagination of a crowd on a certain physical space.
Fortunately, the literature about the place gives me an imagination before I put my feets there. Nowa- days, concept of the place is primarily composed by graphic reproductions. That’s why the 3D modeling counts significantly. The photogrammetry is a science of making measurements from different photographs. For example, with diverse photo- graphs of Notre Dame de Paris, taken and uploaded online by Chinese tourists, I was able to obtain a 3D modeling of this famous cathedral. Regarding the Chauvet cave, we have directly a virtual system which allows people to wander around in 360 degrees.
3D became the material of my reproduction. Due to the imperfection of the technique, bugs appear. The original image is distorted and crushed by the digital data. Part of the painter’s work is trying to redefine the edges and the boundaries between the void and the presence caused by machines. That’s where his own value comes.
